Montpellier Gardens

Montpellier gardens

Montpellier Gardens lies at the heart of the town centre and are an important part of Cheltenham's regency landscape. Many of the buildings surrounding the gardens are listed grade 1. The site (3.5 Ha), owned by the Borough council since 1893, is part of the Cheltenham (Central) Conservation Area which at over 600 hectares is one of the largest in the country. See  the location of the gardens within the town centre. The gardens can be broadly split into two recreational zones - formal and informal. The formal area currently consists of tennis courts and a toddler's play area, which the larger informal area is used extensively for promenading, sitting, and informal children's play area.

The bandstand that can be found on the broadwalk has regular concerts during the summer months.

Whilst the gardens remained popular and well used, the footpaths and buildings were in need of repair and renovation and the council has always been committed to improving the quality of the town's public parks and open spaces through the Civic Pride Initiative. Restoration of Montpellier Gardens has been made possible following the award of a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) - the first time the borough council has received a grant from HLF which, together with partnership funding from the Borough Council, enabled the restoration works to take place to the tune of approximately £1.25m.

Part of the work included the renovation of the Proscenium which is now let to the Gardens Gallery which is an art gallery.

Following the successful restoration and improvement of the Gardens, for the first time (2008) Montpellier Gardens were entered into the national Green Flag Award competition.  The borough council were pleased to announce that the submission was successful.
