Changes to household waste and recycling services
The new household waste and recycling service
On 27 July 2010, the cabinet approved changes to the household waste and recycling services provided by Cheltenham Borough Council.
The changes will be made in stages, with the first change being implemented on 1 September 2010. From this date, householders in Cheltenham will have to present their wheeled bins for collection with the lid firmly closed and collections of any additional side waste will be phased out over time.
From February 2011, the kerbside garden waste service (which is currently provided free of charge to 41,000 residents using re-useable bags) will be replaced with a wheeled bin service. This new service will be available to all residents within the borough at a cost of just £3 per month, payable annually in advance. Residents who opt to join the scheme will be issued with a 240 litre brown wheeled bin for their garden waste which will be collected on a fortnightly basis. Collections of the current garden waste bags will cease, and facilities will be provided for residents to return any bags the they do not want for re-use or recycling.
From April 2011, the council will be introducing a weekly food waste collection service, and collecting refuse and recycling on an alternate weekly basis. This is similar to the system used by Tewkesbury Borough Council.
From 2012, the council are committed to providing a kerbside recycling collection service to all households. This will be for 5 materials - glass, paper, cans/tins, plastic bottles and light kitchen card.
