Promoting sustainability in Cheltenham
The way we all live our lives has a huge impact on our planet. Sometimes the impacts are close to home, such as the pollution produced by traffic congestion. Other impacts are further afield, such as the loss of rainforests, because of our demands for tropical hardwoods, or the damage to landscapes from peat and mineral extraction. One of the key issues facing the whole planet is that of climate change, caused by the burning of fossil fuels. Not only will this affect our environment, it is also likely to impact on our economy and society.
The process of recognising these impacts and seeking to ensure a better quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come, is known as sustainable development. The UK government is strongly committed to the principle of sustainable development and in March 2005 published 'Securing the Future: Delivering UK Sustainable Development Strategy'. This document identifies five principles which, together, should deliver sustainable development:
- living within environmental limits
- ensuring a strong, healthy and just society
- achieving a sustainable economy
- promoting good governance
- using sound science responsibly
Cheltenham Borough Council is also strongly committed to the principle of sustainable development and, together with Cheltenham Strategic Partnership, has developed a vision for the future of Cheltenham:
"We want Cheltenham to deliver a sustainable quality of life, where people, families, their communities and businesses thrive: and in a way which cherishes our cultural and natural heritage, reduces our impact on climate change and does not compromise the quality of life of present and future generations" (from Our future, our choice - Cheltenham 's sustainable community strategy 2008-11).
