Summer holiday scheme gets off to a good start

Published Thursday 29th July 10

With the summer holidays finally upon us, children are already enjoying a variety of sport and play activities as the council’s summer holiday scheme gets underway.

Break funk, street cheer and squash - all new for this year -are just some of the fun things to have a go at.

As well as these more unusual sports, there are also the more traditional sports camps for children to enjoy throughout the five week programme, such as cricket, football, basketball, squash and golf.

Multi Sports Camps are also running throughout the holidays at Christ College and leisure@cheltenham, from 9.30am to 12.30pm for children aged 8-14 and only costs £5 per day, or £20 per week.

This week also sees the PlayZone scheme get underway with a variety of exciting activities as well as themed weeks including mad science, cooking and cheerleading. The playschemes operate from four locations across the borough. Full and half day sessions are available at Balcarras Sports Centre and St Marks Primary School, which can be booked in advance by parents. Rowanfield Infant School and Dunalley Primary School will also host PlayZone schemes that will operate on a first come first served basis each day.
The Play and Sports rangers will also be out in Cheltenham's parks throughout the summer holidays offering free family fun including arts and crafts, toys and game, an under 3s activity area, sports activities and a bouncy castle.

Craig Mortiboys, healthy communities partnership manager, says: "The holiday scheme has got off to a great start and is proving very popular. The children are really enjoying themselves - learning new skills and taking part in new activities whilst having a lot of fun which is what it's all about."

Councillor Andrew McKinlay, cabinet member for sport and culture said: "The team has worked hard to put together an exciting and diverse programme so I'm delighted to hear the first week is going well. There are still spaces available so any parent interested in booking a place should visit our website.''
