Gaming machine permits

Pubs and alcohol licensed premises are able to have gaming machines on the premises. Gaming machines are also known as fruit or amusement with prizes machines.

Permits and notifications last for 10 years and an annual fee is payable.

Making an application

Before you apply, please read the following Gambling Commission advice:

Provide us with:

1.  Either

  • completed notification if you want no more than two machines or
  • completed application for a permit if you would like more than two machines

2.  Fee

Club machine permit

The club machine permit allows gaming machines in members' clubs, commercial clubs and miners' welfare institutes. Gaming machines are also known as fruit or amusement with prizes machines.

Limits

  • Three B3a, B4, C or D gaming machines
  • Permits last for 10 years and an annual fee is payable

B3a, B4, C and D

Club gaming permit

The club gaming permit allows the following activities in members' clubs, commercial clubs and miners' welfare institutes:

1.  Gaming machines (also known as fruit machines or amusements with prizes machines):

  • limited to three B3a, B4, C or D gaming machines

2.  Equal chance gaming, which is:

  • games that do not involve playing or staking against a bank
  • games that are equally favourable to all participants.

Permits last for 10 years and an annual fee is payable.

B3a, B4, C and D

Prize gaming permit

The prize gaming permit allows:

  • gaming with prizes on a specified premises

Features of prize gambling are as follows:

  • gambling with low stakes and prizes
  • the nature of the prize is not affected by the number of people playing or the amounts paid for or raised by the game
  • can consist of a number of games (for example, bingo, roulette)
  • participation fees do not exceed set levels (50p per fee, £500 in total).

The permit lasts for 10 years.

The following premises do not need to apply for prize gaming permits as they are already authorised:

  • holders of adult gaming centre premises licences
  • holders of family entertainment premises licences
  • holders of family entertainment centre gaming machine permit
  • travelling fairs
  • bingo halls

How do I apply?

Unlicensed family entertainment centre gaming machine permit

An unlicensed family entertainment centre is a premises which is mainly used for people to play on gaming machines, such as small arcades in holiday parks, theme parks and seaside resorts.

This permit allows these centres to offer an unlimited number of category D gaming machines only.

Permits last for 10 years.
