Council tax support scheme review for the 2027/28 tax year
From 1 April 2019, Cheltenham Borough Council introduced a revised local council tax support scheme. The new scheme meant that some people receiving help had to pay more towards their council tax bills. Some further changes were made to the scheme from 1 April 2020.
Each year we have to decide whether to make changes to the administration of our council tax support scheme for working age applicants in the borough. This year we are consulting on a proposed scheme from 1 April 2027 that will ensure that our most vulnerable residents continue to receive the vital support they need. We want to hear the views of local residents on the proposals for the 2027-28 scheme.
The consultation is open to everyone who lives, works or studies in Cheltenham and wants to have their views heard, regardless of whether they currently claim benefits or council tax support.
We will use the information collected from this consultation to help us make decisions on the council tax support scheme from 1 April 2027. The results from the consultation will be published later this year on our website.
Work will take place to update the council tax support scheme which will be considered at a full council meeting in December 2026. The council tax support will then show as a discount on council tax bills for 2027-28.
Please use the council tax support scheme consultation form to view and respond to the proposals.
