I bought some food from a shop and when I got home I realised it was out of date. What should I do?

There are two date codes that can be used on food - use by for short shelf life food such as cooked meats and dairy products, and best before for food like canned foods, confectionery and biscuits. It is an offence to sell food past the use by date, but it is not an offence to sell it past the best before date, unless it is mouldy or unfit. You can either go back to the shop and ask for a refund, or pass it on to us at the environmental health department for investigation.
