Can the council close down food businesses that don't comply with hygiene standards?

Yes the council can close down food businesses where there are breaches of food safety and hygiene law and the operator has not taken any notice of our previous requests for compliance. Most food businesses operators are happy to work with us to make sure the situation does not get that bad.

Examples of when a food premises may be closed by the council include a serious pest infestation, very dirty premises or contraventions of legislation. We also have to prove in court that there is a serious risk to health from the premises. In most cases we prefer to use informal means to help businesses comply with the regulations and trade successfully.
