What is contaminated land?

Contaminated land is land that contains substances either on the surface or below ground that present a risk of significant harm to human health or to our wider environment, including water resources, the local ecosystem and structures.

Some land in the borough has the potential to be contaminated by past industrial use. Examples of potentially contaminated land sites in the borough include former gas works, landfill sites, railway depots, fellmongers, metal works, chemical works, fuel stations and engineering works.
