Why is cleaning so important in the control of legionella?

Legionella is widespread in natural water sources. It also thrives in stagnant water. Any system is likely to have areas within it where water movement is impaired (like seams, edges of plates and welds) and over time, scale will form on internal surfaces. In any system a biofilm may form in any of these areas which legionella bacteria love to grow in. It is essential that this is removed regularly, together with scale deposits, by cleaning to reduce the risk of bacterial growth.
