What is shared ownership?

Shared ownership is designed as a stepping stone to completely owning your own home, allowing you to buy what you want, when you can afford it. It allows you to buy a share of a property and pay rent on the remaining part to a housing association. The costs for the share and the rent you pay will depend on the value of the house or flat you are buying

Shared ownership includes the ability to ‘staircase’ up to full ownership. This means you can purchase additional shares in your home when you can afford to do so.
