All employees are automatically admitted to the Local Government Pension Scheme. It is a contracted-out scheme with contributions ranging from 5.5% to 12.5%, dependant on salary.

Employees can choose to opt out of the scheme but legislation requires the council to automatically enrol all its workers who meet certain criteria into a pension scheme. Even if you choose to opt out of the scheme, you may find that you are enrolled again within 3 years in accordance with current legislation.
