The electoral register

The electoral register lists the names and addresses of everyone who is registered to vote in public elections.  The register is used for electoral purposes, such as making sure only eligible people can vote and is also used for other limited purposes specified in law, such as:

  • Detecting crime (e.g. fraud)
  • Calling people for jury service
  • Checking credit applications

The open register

The open register is an extract of the electoral register, but is not used for elections.  It can be bought by any person, company or organisation.  For example, it is used by businesses and charities to confirm name and address details.  Your name and address will be included in the open register unless you ask for them to be removed.  Removing your details from the open register does not affect your right to vote.

The annual canvass

Every year, around the end of August, we send a household enquiry form (HEF) to every property in Cheltenham. By law, you must respond to this form.

The form will be addressed to "The Occupier" and will contain the details of all those in the household that are registered to vote.

You’ll need to update the information for the household by responding to the form. If you do not respond to this form a reminder will be sent to you.

Canvassers will call to all properties where there hasn’t been a response to the HEF or the reminder letter. It is important to provide the information asked for on the HEF.  If you don’t you could be fined £1000.

What do I need to do?

Anyone in the household can respond to the form and it's quicker and easier online. You only need your security codes which can be found on the front and on page two of your form.

If all the details are correct

Confirm the details are correct using one of the options below:

  • Go to www.elecreg.co.uk/cheltenham and enter your security codes
  • Text 07786 209432 with your security codes, separated by a space
  • Freephone 08082 841432 and enter the security codes

If you are unable to use any of the automated options above, please sign the form and post it back to us in the envelope provided or call 01242 264132.

Details incorrect or missing?

If the details on the letter are incorrect - for example, someone has moved away or moved in - it's quick and easy to change the details online:

If you are unable to go online, make the relevant changes on the form, sign it and post back to us in the envelope provided or call 01242 264132.

What happens next?

If you confirm that there are no changes, we won't write to you again as part of the 2019 canvass. All electors listed on the form will remain on the electoral register.

If you tell us there are new people eligible to be registered, we will send each person an "invitation to register". This form can be completed online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

We will publish the new register of electors on 1 December 2019.
