Cheltenham celebrates eight Green Flag awards as Burrow’s Field wins special status for the first time

The council and its partners are again celebrating the Green Flag awards as Cheltenham retains seven flags and wins an eighth for Burrow’s Field.

Sandford Park, Hatherley Park, Montpellier Gardens, Naunton Park, Pittville Park, Springfields Park, Winston Churchill Memorial Gardens and Burrow’s Field are eight of 2,391 UK winners.

The award showcases the international quality mark for parks and green spaces, recognising them as being amongst the country’s finest. The news that all these parks have achieved the Green Flag award is a testament to the hard work of the teams that make these green spaces welcoming places for everyone to enjoy.

Pittville Park has also again achieved the Green Heritage Site Accreditation, supported by Historic England, for the management of its historic features.

Councillor Steve Harvey, cabinet member for waste, recycling and green open spaces, said: “It’s fantastic to see Cheltenham’s parks and green spaces recognised once again with eight Green Flag awards. This achievement reflects the hard work and dedication of our green space team, Ubico staff, volunteers and Friends groups, who care for these spaces throughout the year.

“Our parks play an important role in the wellbeing of residents and visitors, providing spaces to relax, exercise and enjoy nature. I’m especially pleased to see Burrow’s Field earn Green Flag status for the first time which is a wonderful achievement for everyone involved.”

Mark Beany from Leckhampton Rovers Football Club, said: "The partnership between Cheltenham Borough Council and Leckhampton Rovers Football Club over the past few years has enabled Burrow's Field to become something very special. The whole community has been able to enjoy a fun, safe and inviting space to enjoy being active or just meeting up with friends."

“With public services under pressure, investing in parks is not a luxury, it’s a practical, preventative solution and one of the most visible ways to improve people’s quality of life.”

The Green Flag Award Scheme is run by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, under contract from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, in partnership with Keep Scotland Beautiful, Keep Wales Tidy and Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful.
