New cabinet roles announced to help shape Cheltenham’s future
Following the recent local elections and the appointment of a new deputy mayor, leader, Councillor Rowena Hay has taken the opportunity to review roles and responsibilities of cabinet portfolios.
The new cabinet roles will continue to lead the delivery of the organisation’s key aims, as well as helping to ensure that Cheltenham is in the best possible place as Gloucestershire councils head towards reorganisation.
Some of the top priorities include:
- Continued delivery of flagship scheme, Golden Valley at West Cheltenham, as the scheme reaches key milestones and draws closer to construction starting on site
- Affordable housing and community investment
- Combined efforts and partnership work to tackle climate change
- Continued investment in our town centre
- Ensuring future growth and prosperity for all.
The portfolios and new cabinet leads are as follows:
Councillor Rowena Hay - Leader of the council
Councillor Peter Jeffries - Deputy leader and cabinet member for finance and assets
Councillor Jamie Jamieson - Cabinet member for safety and communities
Councillor Steve Harvey - Cabinet member for waste, recycling and green open spaces
Councillor Flo Clucas - Cabinet member for housing and customer services
Councillor Paul Baker - Cabinet member for planning and building control
Councillor Richard Pineger - Cabinet member for climate emergency
Councillor Alisha Lewis - Cabinet member for major developments and housing delivery
Councillor Izaac Tailford - Cabinet member for economic development, wellbeing, culture and the public realm
Councillor Paul Baker has stepped into the role of cabinet member for planning and building control, as Councillor Mike Collins moves away from cabinet, into his role as deputy mayor.
Councillor Paul Baker said: “I am really excited to take on the planning and building control portfolio at a crucial time in the development of our Strategic Local Plan, formulating our planning priorities and policies for the next 20 years. Working with Tewkesbury and Gloucester District Councils we face significant challenges allocating land for housing and employment growth whilst ensuring the necessary infrastructure in terms of schools, transport and community facilities are delivered and important issues including water supply, climate change and nature are addressed.”
Councillor Jamie Jamieson has taken on the role of cabinet member, as Councillor Victoria Atherstone steps down from cabinet and moves into her role as county councillor.
Councillor Jamie Jamieson, cabinet member for safety and communities, said: “I’m really pleased to be joining cabinet and taking on this portfolio. Cheltenham’s town centre represents our whole town – it’s everyone’s neighbourhood – and I’m looking forward to helping ensure it remains safe, inviting and accessible at all times. It is at the centre of a network of communities and organisations that make Cheltenham such a forward-looking place to live. There’s already a lot of positive work underway, and I’m keen to help build on that in the months ahead.”
Councillor Steve Harvey has moved into the role of cabinet member for waste, recycling and green open spaces, as Councillor Paul Baker changes portfolio.
Councillor Steve Harvey said: “I’m honoured and delighted to be joining such a strong cabinet team on Cheltenham Borough Council. I look forward to working hard with our partners for the betterment of our town.”
Leader, Councillor Rowena Hay, added: “Reviewing roles and responsibilities within cabinet helps make sure we are in the best position to continue delivering for our residents. As we move closer to reorganisation across the county, it’s more important than ever for us to make sure that we are representing local people and communities in all that we do.
“Having the opportunity to take on different portfolios allows my cabinet colleagues to build their skills and experience across a range of service areas, which strengthens how we work together, support our communities and deliver our ambitions.
“I’m pleased to welcome Councillor Jamie Jamieson and Councillor Steve Harvey into cabinet. I’d like to congratulate Councillor Victoria Atherstone on being elected as the county councillor for St Mark’s and St Peter’s and thank her for her hard work and dedication during her time in cabinet. I also wish Councillor Mike Collins the very best in his role as deputy mayor.”
