Councils confirm revised timetable for Strategic and Local Plan

Cheltenham Borough, Gloucester City and Tewkesbury Borough councils will be updating the Strategic and Local Plan (SLP) programme in response to a short delay in information being delivered by consultants.

This resulted in discussions with the government as originally the SLP needed to be submitted by the end of the year.

Confirmation was received today (Friday, 23 October) that the councils can now submit the SLP for examination by 31 March 2027, provided the final consultation on the draft plan is completed by the end of December 2026.

The SLP is a joint plan being prepared by the three district councils. It will help guide how the area grows and develops over the next 20 years, setting out proposals for homes, jobs, infrastructure, community facilities and environmental improvements.

Council meetings to consider the draft SLP will take place slightly later than originally scheduled and will be confirmed next week.

Plans for the consultation remain the same but must be completed by 31 December 2026. Residents, businesses, and stakeholders will have the full six-week period that was always planned, giving everyone the same opportunity to review the draft proposals and submit their views before it is submitted.

Alistair Cunningham, chief executive of Tewkesbury Borough Council and senior responsible officer for the SLP, said: "The government has revised the timetable for the submission of local plans, and we are updating our programme accordingly.

"The partnership continues to make good progress on the plan, which will help shape the future of Cheltenham Borough, Gloucester City, and Tewkesbury Borough over the coming decades.

"A revised timetable will ensure all required information is available when the SLP is published, while ensuring that our communities, businesses and other stakeholders have the full six weeks to review the proposals and have their say.”
