Exciting events planned for the grand re-opening of The Wilson
Published on 1st October 2013
Saturday 5 October - 10.30am to 5.15pm
Come and join us to celebrate the grand re-opening of the newly refurbished Cheltenham art gallery and museum, now known as The Wilson, on Saturday 5 October.
Cheltenham’s Mayor, Cllr Wendy Flynn, will cut the ribbon at 10.30am and the fun begins with activities and comedy performances throughout the day.
As well as being able to view the new building, sample the exhibitions and enjoy refreshments in the café bar, there will be craft activities plus walkabout performances and comedy interactions from:
Rannel ‘Hip-Hop Painter Decorators’ - Rannel are putting the finishing touches to the refurbishment of the museum and art gallery – but all may not go exactly to plan.
Maison Foo’s ‘Museum Administrators’ will be ‘administrating’ and ‘museum-ing’ in equal measures and the
hapless ‘Aliens’ will be landing in the gallery but will definitely need your help to find their way around this part of our planet as they’re very easily confused and get lost quite frequently.
New Old Friend’s ‘Antarctic Explorers’ will be battling up ice encrusted staircases, facing hardship and generally struggling heroically around searching for their lost penguin who’s been kid-napped for the Edward Wilson exhibition.
The company will also offer a unique and funny take on the storytelling game ‘Consequences’ – so don’t forget to join in!
Jane Lillystone, museum, arts & tourism manager, said: “This is a very exciting day. It has taken years of planning but I’m sure the public will agree it has been worth it. The new building has transformed the art gallery and museum. To celebrate we’ve got lots of free family entertainment lined up so it should be a day to remember. We hope everyone will join us at The Wilson to celebrate the grand re-opening.”
The Wilson will be open from 10.30am until 5.15pm on Saturday 5 October. Opening hours are 9.30am to 5.15pm, seven days a week. Entry is free. For more information visit the website.

Cheltenham’s art gallery and museum has undergone a major redevelopment, Building for a New Future, with the design and build of a new extension and the refurbishment of some existing galleries and public spaces.
The scheme has transformed Cheltenham’s art gallery and museum, allowing for improved access and enhanced opportunities for the display of its locally, regionally, nationally and internationally important art and heritage collections. It also enables The Wilson to become a major venue for national and international touring exhibitions.
