Award winning health walks scheme ‘Walk Well’ will be taking a short break over the festive period, but will be starting again in the New Year ready to burn any excess gained over the holiday period.

The majority of the walks will be taking a two week break between Christmas and New Year, although some of the leaders will be continuing throughout – ready to meet those who are still keen to get some fresh air and keep active over the holiday period.

Rowena Tassell, the council’s healthy lifestyles development officer says: “The Walk Well scheme has been a major success with people in the Cheltenham area. At this time of year, when it’s easy to over indulge, there is no better way to start the New Year than by joining the health walks.”

“We will be back at the start of 2014 continuing the eleven weekly walks which currently make up our programme. As ever, we are looking for new volunteers to support our scheme, so if you are looking to support a local community initiative, have an hour to give and would like to increase your physical activity, please do get in touch.”

Councillor Rowena Hay, cabinet member for sport and culture, added: “The walks are always popular as they are suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. Some join in to improve their fitness, some are referred by their GP and others come along simply because they enjoy the fresh air. The walks are also a great way of meeting others.
''Thanks goes to the trained volunteers who guide the walks as without them, it wouldn't be possible for us to offer this free activity.''
