‘Identity’ - free event this weekend in Cheltenham

The first event for LGBT History Month in Cheltenham is taking place this weekend (Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 February) at the Wilson Art Gallery and Museum.
‘Identity’ focuses on how progress has been made from the past to get to where we are today, as well as looking at how society and communities can help those who identify as LGBT+ look ahead to a more positive future.
The event is open to drop in to from 12-4pm both days and will feature a range of family friendly stalls, exhibits and information by organisations and projects that give a focus to LGBT+.
There will also be a series of interactive workshops over the weekend, each 45 minutes long. You can book on to the free workshops by signing up on the day or at identitychelt.eventbrite.co.uk.
Organisations involved include: Gloucestershire Gay & Lesbian Community (GGLC), GAY-GLOS, Victim Support, 2Gether Trust, NHS Hope House, University of Gloucestershire and the Cheltenham Trust, of which the Wilson is a part.

Cllr Flo Clucas, cabinet member for healthy lifestyles said: “The Identity event will be a chance to explore what it means to identify as LGBT+ in the past and present and how we want the future to look.”
Matt Wester, President for LGBT+ Society at the University of Gloucestershire says, "'Identity' is a way of giving something to the community that provides more transparency and awareness regarding those that identify at LGBT+. It's about opening doors to give LGBT+ History Month greater presence and understanding in and around Cheltenham, at the exact time it needs to be talked about."

- LGBT History Month is an annual celebration in February across the United Kingdom which began in 2005.
- A social media campaign will run throughout the month to keep local residents up to date with the events and news. Everyone is welcome to take part and promote the events by sharing the tweets and Facebook posts that will be going out during the month using #LGBTChelt.
- Cheltenham LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) Partnership was formed in 2015 and has representatives from Cheltenham Borough Homes, University of Gloucestershire, Gloscats, Gloucestershire Gay and Lesbian Community, GAY-GLOS, Cheltenham Trust and Cheltenham Borough Council.
