Cheltenham’s remembrance service and parade to honour the sacrifice of armed services in war: 11am on Sunday 12 November
On Remembrance Day (Saturday 11 November) the council is supporting The Royal British Legion by encouraging businesses, shops, offices and individuals to pause to remember at 11am. Whilst there will not be a service on Saturday, representatives from the Royal British Legion will be observing the two minute silence at the war memorial on the Promenade.
On Sunday 12 November, the war memorial in Cheltenham’s Long Gardens will once again be the centrepiece for the town’s service of remembrance and civic parade. The service will begin at 10.50am and a lone trumpeter will play ‘The last post’ before two minutes of silence at 11am, honoured by Cheltenham’s Mayor, Klara Sudbury.
After the Reveille, the service continues with prayers, hymns and the national anthem, played by Gloucestershire Police Band.
The mayor will lay the first wreath at the war memorial followed by other civic dignitaries, including borough and county councillors, and representatives from local organisations. After the wreaths have been laid, the civic party will watch from the steps of the Municipal Offices as Cheltenham Silver Band leads the march past.
Taking part will be the Cheltenham branch of the Royal British Legion; Cheltenham Royal Naval Association; 501 Sqn RAuxAF (Brize); 243 Gloucester Field Hospital; Joint Services Signals Unit; and Veterans. Also attending will be detachments from the naval, army and RAF cadets, and patrols from local scouts and girl guides.
In the evening, the mayor will attend the Festival of Remembrance, which is organised by the Royal British Legion and held at the town hall.
Cllr Klara Sudbury said: ‘’As first citizen I count it a privilege to be able to lead the town in this act of remembrance.’’
Cllr Sudbury invites any ex-service personnel who would like to attend the services to assemble with the group at 10.20am in front of the Municipal Offices, along with members of the community.
