Recycling boxes by the kerbside

Residents asked to sort their recyclables as an additional 50 tonnes of recycling is collected from Cheltenham residents.

This comes following the launch of the borough’s new waste and recycling scheme just over a month ago. Previously this waste could have been sent straight to landfill unless residents had taken it to bring banks themselves.

The new scheme which launched in October, allows residents to recycle a variety of additional materials from their kerbside including: all types of plastics, dry and clean textiles, paired shoes, small electricals and household batteries. New blue reusable bags have also been issued to allow residents to recycle all types of cardboard.

Cllr Chris Coleman, cabinet member for clean and green environment, says: “We’re incredibly pleased with these figures and would like to thank our residents for the way they’ve embraced the new recycling scheme.

“Due to the huge amount of recyclables we now collect from the kerbside, we do need residents to separate their recycling (mixed plastics, tins, cans and aerosols in one box and paper and glass in another, with all cardboard in the blue bag).

“This helps us get maximum return for recycling, means better value for the tax payer and allows the crews to operate efficiently and spend less time blocking roads.

“Crews will be putting stickers on boxes to help explain just how items should be sorted.

“As with anything new, the service will take some time to get used to, however the benefits are fantastic, and will help us to keep so much waste out of landfill.

“In addition, I’d like to thank Ubico staff for their positivity and professionalism.”
