The importance of licensing in people’s everyday lives is being highlighted with a public awareness campaign for this year’s National Licensing Week (17 to 21 June).

Licensing affects everyone every day, but not always in an obvious way. Licensing matters when people use a taxi, buy items from a market or street trader, bet in the local bookies, buy a pint or a glass of wine, get a tattoo or a piercing, buy a pet, give money to charity, get rid of scrap metal or visit a night club, theatre or museum.

Licensing is not done in isolation and the contribution of partners is key to ensuring licensing is effective in keeping people safe.  In addition to the awareness campaign, licensing officers from the council will be working with the police, Cheltenham Safe and the Gambling Commission on a number of ‘days of action’:

  • On Tuesday officers will be working with the Gambling Commission doing a number of inspections of licensed betting shops and gaming centres
  • On Thursday officers will be working with the police carrying out checks and inspections of licensed taxis and private hire vehicles
  • On Friday licensing officers will be working with Cheltenham Safe in the night-time economy inspecting bars and clubs and engaging with door staff.

Councillor Andrew McKinlay, cabinet member for development and safety, said: “National Licensing Week is an excellent opportunity to highlight how important licensing is people’s everyday lives.

“It exists to ensure our residents and people visiting the town are safe and protected, whether that be taking a taxi, enjoying a drink or attending one of Cheltenham’s famous festivals.

“The council is responsible for issuing a broad range of licenses for a wide range of regulated activities and this week is also a good opportunity to highlight the strong partnership work that exists in licensing.”
