Cheltenham Borough Council wins national MJ award - recognition for local investment within the borough and financial planning.

Cheltenham Borough Council recognised by MJ achievement awards for its efforts in making significant local investments and long-term financial planning.
The national MJ achievement awards last week recognised Cheltenham Borough Council for its efforts in making significant local investments and long-term financial planning to ensure continuity of frontline services and public realm investment. This approach has helped the council manage the impact following the loss of £6.8m funding since 2010.
Judged by influential private and public sector representatives, each category of award gave councils the chance to illustrate their ability and performance.
Councillor Rowena Hay member for finance said: “We are absolutely delighted to win this award. It gives the council national recognition for its financial approach that has seen us make sound commercial investments to support continued investment following a reduction in core funding. Our focus remains on considering the local market and investment within the borough which will help boost local economic activity.”
Paul Jones executive director of finance and assets continued: “This award recognises that the council punches above its weight with an astute treasury management approach and commercial investments that will enable the council to be financially sustainable by 2021/22.”
Winning an MJ achievement award not only allows local authorities to be recognised for their achievements over the last 12 months but also to share their expertise with their peers.
A recent Local Government Association peer review noted that “The Council’s finances are in a good position to withstand the uncertainties that lie ahead.”
Heather Jameson, The MJ’s editor, said: ‘’Congratulations to Cheltenham BC for being named as Best Commercial Council.
‘’Our judges had a difficult task, selecting the best authority, never an easy decision when there are so many strong contenders, but Cheltenham stood out for its approach that covered the whole council.
‘’Well done to everyone at Cheltenham BC. This is a massive achievement and they should be proud of their innovative approach to saving local taxpayers’ money.’’
