Recycling centre opens to the public

Swindon Road household recycling centre will reopen today Monday 11 May 2020 for essential visits only.
- Social distancing measures in place
- Access restrictions will apply
Following updated advice from the government, Cheltenham Borough Council’s household recycling centre (HRC) in Swindon Road will reopen from 9am today, Monday 11 May 2020 for essential visits only with social distancing measures in place and access restrictions– long delays are likely.
The latest government guidance makes it clear that residents should only take waste to a HRC if it cannot be stored safely at home and no alternative disposal options are available.
Social distancing measures at 2m will be strictly enforced to help keep visitors and staff safe and crucially anyone with covid-19 symptoms and those in self-isolating households MUST NOT visit.
To help manage the number of visitors, restricted access measures will be in place:
- Only Cheltenham residents can use the facility
- Visits are restricted to one visit on their household’s normal waste collection day.
- Visitors may be asked to show a proof of address (print or online) such as a most recent council tax bill or utility bill – gas, electric or landline telephone relating to the property where the waste is from.
- We would ask residents for their support and avoid visiting the site after 6pm and at weekends to help key workers access the HRC.
To ensure the Swindon Road depot site can still deliver normal kerbside services, visitors are asked not to turn right onto the site and block access and not to queue on Swindon Road if the access road is full.
To limit the number of people on-site only five cars at a time will be allowed in and vehicles should only have drivers wherever possible – a maximum of one passenger is permitted if you need help to unload your waste and recycling.
Visitors are asked to only bring to site what they can safely unload themselves as site staff need to social distance so will not be able to help with unloading. Please check the website for details of opening times and what you need to know before you arrive.
Everyone should keep using their kerbside waste collection service, which Cheltenham Borough Council and its service provider, Ubico, are working hard to keep running, for recycling, garden and food waste and general waste.
The council understands this is a more restrictive service than would normally be available and hopes that residents appreciate the need to ensure the safety of both staff and residents.
Councillor Chris Coleman, cabinet member, clean green environment said: “I am really pleased that we are now in a position to reopen the Household Recycling Centre in Swindon Road. I would urge people to be patient as long delays are likely, not to queue on Swindon Road to block access for emergency vehicles, and maintain social distancing so we can make sure that this is safe for our staff and for visitors. It would be really good if residents could avoid after 6pm and weekends to allow all our key workers who are working so hard to keep services going for us, have a chance to get to the HRC too.”
