Local residents are invited to join a visit to Cheltenham’s German twin town of Göttingen, organised by Cheltenham Twinning Association and which this year takes place to coincide with the Goose Girl ‘Gänseliesel’ Festival.

The visit, from 21 to 28 September is a wonderful opportunity to see this delightful half-timbered town near the Harz Mountains, to experience its culture and traditions and to engage with people from our partner town.

Visitors can enjoy a full itinerary of events, including a tour of Göttingen, attending the Gänseliesel Festival, day trips to places of interest and a social events hosted by the Göttingen Twinning Association.

Annette Wight, twinning officer, said: “With this visit cancelled in 2021 due to the pandemic, we’re delighted to once again be able to offer a fantastic opportunity to our residents to visit our beautiful twin town of Göttingen. Our twin towns have enjoyed a fantastic relationship spanning 72 years and Cheltenham visitors always receive the warmest of welcomes.  We really look forward to sharing their culture and traditions which bring much enjoyment and lasting friendships to many.”

Cllr Diggory Seacome, chairman of Cheltenham Twinning Association said: “Such visits provide the opportunity for the sharing of knowledge and best practice between the partner towns, for people to learn from each other and to see ‘how things are done’. I am sure we will all be impressed by Göttingen’s recycling and cycling achievements, as I was during a previous visit.”

Expressions of interest for this visit are needed by mid-May and the booking form needs to be completed by late May with the necessary information and deposit. The package offer includes travel by Marchants coach, Channel crossing, overnight hotel stays in Antwerp and Leuven enroute and the use of the coach in Göttingen for local excursions. Visitors can opt to stay in a hotel in Göttingen or accept the offer of a homestay with a local family.
