Welcome to Cheltenham business

Cheltenham is home to around 4,000 businesses. With business productivity at a higher level than the national average Cheltenham has a thriving economy and is recognised nationally as a retail and festival destination.

These pages provide information on a range of opportunities and services for business provided by Cheltenham Borough Council and its partners.

The Councils Economic Development Team leads the drive to encourage investment in the town and to create employment opportunities. Their work is aligned to the Cheltenham Economic Development Strategy and Action Plan which aims to:

  • Increase business investment
  • Ensure investment can be accommodated within environmental goals
  • Address employment needs and opportunities
  • Support growth sectors
  • Create an entrepreneurial culture and support small business growth

The teams work is supported by an Economic Partnership which, through collaborative workings, ensures that the activities we do bring the most economic benefit to the town.

To work with the council towards these aims and to receive promotional and financial support for your business initiatives you can become a part of Cheltenham Business Pride.

There are some big names already here - Spirax Sarco, GE Aviation, Kraft Foods, Vertex, Ultra Electronics, Kohler Mira, GCHQ, Zurich Insurance and many others. Of many established business locations, Cheltenham’s largest is Kingsditch (home to firms such as Ultra Electronics, PDC Krone and Vibixa), conveniently located with excellent access to the M5 motorway, A4019 and nearby Gloucester. Other estates include Kingsmead, Tewkesbury Road, Mead Road and Arle Court, home to GE Aviation. It’s a testimony to their popularity that Cheltenham’s estates enjoy high occupancy rates – while still offering many inward investment opportunities.

Then of course, there is the town centre, which was voted High Street of the Year in 2005, thanks in no lesser part, to you, our businesses. In 2008, High Street names include Boots, Tesco, HMV, Marks and Spencers, Primark and many, many independent traders offering a slice of life the Cheltenham way, with local product knowledge and investment. The borough offers a unique combination of culture, transport links, higher and further education and a diverse, skilled workforce.
