Historic Cheltenham chapels reopen with a new lease of life

The historic Victorian chapels at Cheltenham Cemetery and Crematorium have been restored as The Old Chapel, a venue comprising of a café and two chapel spaces for wakes and gatherings.

Located in the former waiting room, the new coffee shop offers views of the surrounding hills and parts of the cemetery. The space has been thoughtfully designed to create a peaceful environment where people can come together, reflect and celebrate the lives of loved ones.

The gothic-style chapels, located within Cheltenham Borough Council’s cemetery on Bouncers Lane, date back to the 19th century. They have been sensitively restored by Lajos Mayer and his wife Jana, who run The Old Chapel venue. All works have been carried out with the appropriate permissions and support from the council, ensuring the improvements respect the buildings’ Grade II listed status.

The South Chapel is now open, providing a larger space for wakes and gatherings, while the North Chapel, a more intimate setting, is due to open in August.

Councillor Steve Harvey, cabinet member for waste and recycling and parks, gardens and green open space at Cheltenham Borough Council, who also has responsibility for bereavement services, including the cemetery and crematorium, said: “These chapels are beautiful Victorian buildings and an important part of Cheltenham’s story. We know that many local people have a strong connection to these historic landmarks. Preserving and bringing them back into use in a way that respects their heritage is incredibly important.

“We are proud to be part of this important journey with Lajos and his wife Jana to help these buildings remain a valued part of the cemetery and available to the community. Providing a welcoming space where families can come together before or after services will make a real difference, especially at such important times.”

Lajos Mayer, who runs The Old Chapel venue with his wife Jana, said: “We’re delighted to bring these striking buildings back into everyday use in a way that feels respectful, welcoming, and appropriate to their setting. These chapels have a long history in Cheltenham and mean a great deal to many people who value their story and heritage. We are delighted to be part of their next chapter. Our aim is to create a space where visitors and their families can spend time together, whether over a hot drink or as part of a gathering to celebrate the life of a loved one.

“Thanks to the support from the council, we’ve been able to give these buildings a new lease of life. They are an important part of the community, which is why it was important to bring them back into use for local people. We also hope The Old Chapel will become a place where the wider community can enjoy a coffee, homemade cakes and light lunches in peaceful surroundings, even when they are simply looking for somewhere quiet to relax and reflect."

Lajos and Jana Mayer have extensive experience in hospitality, having previously run well-known local venues. Care has been taken throughout the project to sensitively retain the chapels’ historic character, while ensuring the alterations and improvements are suitable for modern use.
