Local Councillors

Cheltenham Borough Council is responsible for making many important decisions on behalf of its residents and provides vital services to its community. Policy making, budget setting and performance monitoring are the responsibility of the elected Councillors. Officers of the Council are responsible for implementing policies set by full Council and the day to day management.

There are 40 Councillors on Cheltenham Borough Council. Local Councillors are elected by the community to decide how the Council should carry out its various activities. They represent the public interest as well as individuals living within the ward in which he or she has been elected to serve a term of office. To do this they have regular contact with the general public through either Council meetings, telephone calls, e-mails, face to face or in some cases, surgeries. Your Councillor will discuss any concerns or problems relating to Council services and listen to your views on issues that you feel are important.

Councillors are not paid a salary for their work, but they do receive allowances. By law, all members of the Council are required to complete a Declaration of Interest form and adhere to the Members Code of Conduct.

Following the last local elections the political make-up of the Council is as follows:

The Liberal Democrat group has formed the Council’s administration in the form of a 7 member Cabinet which is led by the Leader of the Council.
