Council tax payment
Council tax is normally payable in ten monthly instalments starting in April each year - the monthly instalment amounts are shown on your bill.
If you are experiencing difficulty in paying, it is important that you contact us quickly so we can help you.
Pay by direct debit
If you set up a Direct Debit to pay your council tax, you won't have to renew it or contact us every April. It'll run on automatically.
Advantages of a Direct Debit include:
- easy and convenient
- safe and secure
- payments are made automatically
- choose a payment date 1st, 15th, 28th or last day of the month
The quickest and easiest way to set up and manage your Direct Debit is to register with our online service. My Revenues and Benefits allows you to manage your council tax, business rates, housing benefit and council tax support accounts all in one place.

Use your debit or credit card to pay online. You will need to have your council tax account number to hand, which is shown on your bill or payment card.
Pay by telephone
Call 0300 456 2774 at any time to pay by debit or credit card on our automated telephone payment service.
Please have your council tax account reference to hand, which is shown on your bill or payment card.
Pay in person at the post office
We are no longer accepting payments at our offices, however if you need to pay by cash you can do this at a post office. You will need to contact the countil tax team to set this up. Pay using online banking
If you wish to pay via online banking, you will need the following information about the council's bank account:
- destination sort code: 30-00-00
- destination account number: 00342572
- destination account: Cheltenham Borough Council - Head Office Collection Account - Lloyds TSB Bank plc
Please ensure your seven digit account reference is quoted as a reference with your payments.
Pay at the bank
Making payment at a branch of your own bank, or at any Lloyds TSB Bank, is free. Please note that if you pay at a bank, it may take several days for the payment to reach us.
Pay by cheque through the post
We starting to phase out cheques and will continue to do so over the forthcoming months whilst advising customers of the alternative payment options available.
If you need to pay by cheque, this should be made payable to 'Cheltenham Borough Council' and sent to:PO Box 10
Please write your council tax acccount reference clearly on the back of the cheque. If you would like a receipt, please ask for one when sending in your payment.
