Council tax payment

Council tax is normally payable in ten monthly instalments starting in April each year - the monthly instalment amounts are shown on your bill.

If you are experiencing difficulty in paying, it is important that you contact us quickly so we can help you.

Pay by direct debit

The easiest way to pay is to set up a monthly direct debit. Please complete, sign and return the direct debit mandate on the reverse of your council tax bill. Alternatively you can contact us with your bank details and we can set up your direct debit over the telephone.

If you pay by direct debit, you can choose a payment date of either the 1st, 15th, 28th or last day of the month.

Register for e-billing to receive your next council tax bill by email if you pay by direct debit.

Pay online

Use your debit or credit card to pay online. You will need to have your council tax account number to hand, which is shown on your bill or payment card.

Please note that a transaction charge of 1.35 per cent will be added for credit card payments. This is to recover the charge made to us by the bank.

Pay by telephone

Call 0300 456 2774 at any time to pay by debit or credit card on our automated telephone payment service.

Pay in person

Visit the reception in the Municipal Offices on the Promenade, or the area offices at Oakley Community Resource Centre, Clyde Crescent or Hesters Way Community Resource Centre, Cassin Drive to pay by cash, cheque, debit or credit card.

Please remember to take your council tax payment card with you. Please note that a transaction charge of 1.35 per cent will be added for credit card payments.

Pay using telephone banking

If you wish to pay through your bank telephone payment service, you will need the following information about the council's bank account:

  • destination sort code: 30-00-00
  • destination account number: 00342572
  • destination account: Cheltenham Borough Council - Head Office Collection Account - Lloyds TSB Bank plc

Pay at the bank

If you wish to pay at a bank, please contact the council tax helpline on 01242 264 161 so we can send you bank giro payment slips.

Making payment at a branch of your own bank, or at any Lloyds TSB Bank, is free. Please note that if you pay at a bank, it may take several days for the payment to reach us.

Pay by cheque through the post

Send a cheque, made payable to 'Cheltenham Borough Council' to:

Please write your council tax acccount reference clearly on the back of the cheque. If you would like a receipt, please ask for one when sending in your payment.
