Creating an enhanced public space at Boots Corner

You may have seen in the local news that we are planning to make improvements to the Clarence Fountain plinth at Boots Corner. In December 2021 our council cabinet approved plans to invest in improvements to the plinth that surrounds the fountain. The changes include adding raised containers which will be filled with plants and trees.

The design also includes improved seating, space for wheelchairs and a step up to the top of the plinth.

We are confident that the proposed changes will create an appealing focal point for shoppers, businesses, residents and visitors as well as encouraging biodiversity in our town centre.

We have started research and surveys on the area and we expect construction work to begin towards the end of March (after Cheltenham Gold Cup week). We're working hard to minimise the impact to businesses in the surrounding area. The existing planter, bike rack and electric scooter bay will be moved temporarily to the end of the pedestrianised section of the Promenade, opposite Martin and Co jewellers. This will allow the installation of the hoardings (protective barrier panels).

Due to the positioning of the hoardings, there will be no access to the plinth during the works and it will also block pedestrian access to the pavement along the south east side of the plinth, between Boots and Starbucks. You will still be able to go around the north side of the plinth.

Pedestrian access will be blocked on the south-east side of the plinth. The alternative route is around the north side of the plinth

We expect works will take up to 10 weeks, depending on the weather.
