The government is committed to the principles of sustainable development and continues to work to the principles set out in the document 'Securing the Future: Delivering UK Sustainable Development Strategy' (published 2005).  This document identifies five principles which, together, should deliver sustainable development:

  • living within environmental limits
  • ensuring a strong, healthy and just society
  • achieving a sustainable economy
  • promoting good governance
  • using sound science responsibly

For a policy to be sustainable it must respect all five principles. A sustainable economy, good governance and sound science will be the means by which the goals of living within environmental limits and a just society will be achieved.
