Falls Awareness Week takes place every year in June. This year’s Falls Awareness Week will run from 17 to 21 June 2013 and the theme is healthy feet.

  • Lynworth Court

During the week Cheltenham Borough Council and Cheltenham Borough Homes (CBH) are holding an event at Lynworth Court offering advice and information on preventing falls and foot health.

The event will be held on 19 June and is aimed at the over 65's. It is being offered to all CBH sheltered accommodation residents as well as those residents who live locally to Lynworth Court.

As the theme for this year is 'foot health' on the day people can have their slippers checked, a podiatrist will be on hand to offer foot checks, there will be exercise tasters, functional fitness MOT's and advice about healthy eating. The day will also see a new community class launched which will run weekly from Lynworth Court in partnership with CBH.

Rowena Tassell, healthy lifestyles development officer for Cheltenham Borough Council, says: “Falls Awareness Week offers an opportunity for older people, relatives and carers to find out more about falls and join in with local classes and services that can help to prevent them. We’re pleased to be able to put on this event for local residents as it will provide an opportunity for them to get their health and feet checked out.

“We are working with Community Transport so we are able to provide transport for all CBH residents to enable them to attend the event and if possible, we will encourage other members of the public to access the transport from CBH sites if they are unable to get there independently.”

Michele Walker, housing support team leader at CBH said: “Our aim is to help our residents’ live happy, healthy and independent lives, so we’re pleased to be hosting this event in partnership with the Council. We want to encourage all our residents to come along and find out how they can increase their health and fitness and reduce their chances of suffering a fall.”

The event will take place between 10.30 and 2pm. If you are interested in attending you will need to book a time slot by calling these numbers - CBH residents should call the housing support assistant on 01242 774610. All other residents should call the council’s healthy lifestyles officer on 01242 775202.
