The gym closes on Friday 30 August for works and a temporary gym and cardio suite should be available from Saturday 31 August.

The main gym at leisure@cheltenham is set to get a big refurbishment. It’s planned to reopen on Monday 23 September with the new kit, zones, and brand new look and feel (it will reopen to members only on 21 and 22 September).

The new equipment will include the latest state of the art Precor Cardio Kit with the next evolution of the AMT (adaptive motion trainer), treadmills and bikes. The strength provision is being developed and increased and a wider variety of machines will be available.

There will also be a dedicated functional/body weight based training area for body weight training using equipment such as TRX, punchbags and plyometric boxes. The layouts and new zones will optimise the space to provide a broad range of options for training.

The team will be offering some functional training sessions to get everyone ready for the new functional space in the new gym.

Stephen Petherick, general manager for leisure@cheltenham, says: “The gym closes tomorrow (Friday 30 August) and we’re setting up two temporary gyms from Saturday 31 August if all goes well moving the equipment. We apologise for any disruptions but what is coming will be awesome!

“Don't forget membership gives you the pools, spa, track and class programme to keep you busy and a discount on racquets sports and birthday parties. The current promotion also offers 20 per cent off for new and renewing members.”

Cllr Rowena Hay, cabinet member for sport and culture, says: “We are pleased to be able to offer such state-of-the-art equipment to our customers. We work hard to ensure that our facilities always remain competitive and in line with our customers’ requirements.”

The refurbishment costs over £230,000 and the money has come from the council's capital budget, supported by resale of the old equipment. The facilities were last updated in 2008 after the severe flooding in 2007.
