After nearly a month of refurbishment, the main gym at leisure@cheltenham is set to open its doors to the public on Monday 23 September.

Mayor Wendy Flynn and cabinet member for sport and culture, Rowena Hay, will officially open the refurbished gym with a ribbon cut at 11am.

The new equipment includes the latest, state-of-the-art Precor Cardio Kit with the next evolution of the AMT (adaptive motion trainer), treadmills and a separate spin bike suite. The area focusing on strength-building has been developed and increased with a wider variety of machines are now available.

There is also a dedicated functional/body weight based training area for body weight training, using equipment such as TRX, punchbags and plyometric boxes. The layouts and new zones will optimise the space to provide a broad range of options for training. There are even inspiring quotations on the walls for motivation.
Members of leisure@ will be treated to exclusive access to the gym for two days prior to the official reopening on the 21 and 22 September.

Stephen Petherick, general manager for leisure@cheltenham, says: "We're all very excited about the reopening. The gym is looking really great and the new machines bring us right up to date with the latest in fitness technology. There's something in the gym for everyone's fitness levels, whether you're a beginner or experienced, so please do come along and have a look."

Cabinet member for sport and culture, Rowena Hay, says: “This is really great news for leisure@cheltenham. These fantastic new facilities will be a great addition to the sporting culture that already exists in the town. I hope this redevelopment inspires people to become more active and take advantage of the facilities that leisure@ has to offer.”

The refurbishment has cost over £230,000 and the money has come from the council’s capital budget, supported by the resale of old equipment. The facilities were last updated in 2008 after the severe flooding in 2007.
