As more people sign up to the garden waste scheme, Cheltenham Borough Council is reminding residents that it’s not too late to get discount.

New customers can benefit from a discounted rate if they sign up and pay for a bin by 31 May 2015.

At a special rate of £36, residents can have a 240 litre brown wheeled bin for their garden waste which will be emptied fortnightly. Grass cuttings, hedge and shrub cuttings, leaves, twigs, bark, plants, flowers, weeds and windfall fruit can all go into the bin.  After 31 May, the price will go back up to £38.
Brown bin subscriptions have increased by 1,000 in the past year, contributing to a total of nearly 15,000*.

Cabinet member for clean and green environment, Cllr Chris Coleman is encouraged by the figures.  He said:  ‘’Now that spring is here, it’s great to see that more residents are enjoying the benefits of the garden waste scheme.  It’s important that we all take responsibility for keeping garden waste out of landfill so that it doesn’t produce harmful substances which damage the environment.  All of the garden waste that we collect is composted and re-used as a soil conditioner.

‘’I hope that those who are not already part of the scheme will make the most of the special offer and sign up now.’’
Existing customers who renew before their renewal date will also receive the discounted rate of £36.
