Recycling boxes by the kerbside

In windy weather household waste and recycling containers and their contents can easily get blown around, and this has led to some littering issues across the borough.

Cllr Chris Coleman, cabinet member for clean and green environment, says: “With these high winds it may help to put containers in a sheltered spot, but only if they can still be easily seen by collectors and are placed at the front of your property.

“We’d also like to ask residents to ensure that the lids on their recycling boxes are shut properly when presenting their boxes on the kerbside. It’s also a good idea to put a heavy object on top such as a stone or brick.

“Our collection crews pick up materials they drop or spill and may be able to pick up items blown close to containers, but cannot pick up those blown down the street.”

Please help us by doing all you can to avoid wind-blown material and report any serious litter problems to the council’s customer service team on 01242 262626 or via the website: www.cheltenham.gov.uk/reportit The council’s street cleansing contactor, Ubico, is aware of the issues and will be out litter picking in the areas affected.

Residents who do not have a recycling box lid can request one by contacting our customer service team on 01242 264244 or through our website: www.cheltenham.gov.uk/recycling
