Recycling centre to close for two days for new compactors

Two day closure: 3 and 4 October 2017

To allow for new compacting equipment to be installed at the Swindon Road household recycling centre, the facility will close to the public on 3 and 4 October 2017.

The new, more efficient compactors will crush the waste into a bin at the site so that fewer trips have to be made to transfer the waste to landfill or composting areas.

The closure will mean that the work – which will involve the use of cranes – can be done in a safe environment without posing a risk to the public.

The Wingmoor Farm household recycling facility will be open so residents can take their waste and recyclables there in the meantime.

Councillor Chris Coleman, cabinet member for clean and green environment said:  ‘’The current compactors are approaching 30 years old and are now at the end of their usable life.  The good news is that the new machines will be safer and more reliable and will compact more waste into the bins, so there will be fewer trips from the recycling centre to dispose of the waste.

’’I hope the two day closure doesn’t cause residents too much inconvenience.’’
