Hands holding a mobile phone surrounded in darkness

We never ask people for their payment card details over the phone.

The borough council is aware that some customers have been receiving phone calls advising them that their council tax account is in credit. They are then asked for their payment card details with the promise of a refund.

These calls are part of a scam; the council tax team does not contact customers and ask for their payment card details.

Customers are urged to be vigilent and never give their bank card details to anyone over the phone.  Please also remind any elderly relatives or neighbours to be cautious.

Customers can contact the council tax helpline on 01242 264161 to check the balance on their council tax account.

Frauds and scams can be reported to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 but if anyone has given their bank card detail they should contact their bank and the police immediately.
