Help us create a living legacy to Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, 1926 to 2022

This is to give people the opportunity to plant trees in memoriam to honour Her Majesty.

With a focus on planting sustainably, the Queen’s Green Canopy encourages the planting of trees to create a legacy in honour of the Queen’s leadership of the nation which will benefit future generations. 

In Cheltenham, over 1,000 small trees or whips are being planted across four sites in from mid-November to January, at Clyde Crescent, Queen Elizabeth II, Chargrove Lane and Swindon Village.

Cllr Iain Dobie, cabinet member for waste, recycling and street services, said: “We’re pleased to support The Queen’s Green Canopy which will serve as a lasting tribute to Her Majesty’s extraordinary service to her country and her people.

“Cheltenham is well known for its beautiful trees and we hope to inspire a new generation of individuals and communities to plant, protect and promote urban trees in our town.”

Lucy Wise, community ranger for Cheltenham Borough Council, said: “We’re keen to hear from local residents who would like to get involved in these special planting events across our town. They will leave a wonderful legacy for many years to come.”

Cllr David Gray, cabinet member responsible for the environment for Gloucestershire County Council, said: “We’re delighted to be able to work in collaboration with Cheltenham Borough Council to support a project which will bring many benefits to the local community and wildlife.

“I’m proud that the county council has been able to fund the planting of these trees using grant funding we bid for from the Forestry Commission.

“These new trees will create an area for many generations to cherish, that will help everyone to appreciate the environment and learn how trees can help with climate change.”

All of the saplings will be native species including common oak, hornbeam, damson, wild pear, wild cherry, field maple, poplar, scotts pine, elder, hawthorn and silver birch.
