Cheltenham Borough Council is implementing an online booking system for its Swindon Road Household Recycling Centre, which will be going live from Monday 4 March 2024.
The decision was made to improve customer experience and because of the positive customer feedback from other Recycling Centres which already have booking systems in place.
The booking system, which will be available for residents to pre-book from 26 February 2024, will work in a similar way to the one utilised by Gloucestershire County Council and will mean that residents will be guaranteed entry to the site and reduce the likelihood of making wasted trips.
Gareth Edmundson, Chief Executive said: “The benefit of pre-booking slots at Swindon Road Recycling centre will mean quick and easy entry to the site for Cheltenham residents. It will improve the overall experience for customers, reduce queuing and will help improve air quality by reducing the number of cars idling whilst queuing to get in.
Having a steady flow of visitors will mean residents will have more time to correctly identify recycling containers with the availability of staff on site for additional help.
Booking a slot is simple and can be done from a laptop or smartphone using the new online system. If residents are unable to get online, they can call customer services on 01242 262626 and a slot will be booked for them.”
Cheltenham residents are reminded that there are some items that we are unable to take including:
- DIY and builders' rubble, including asbestos, plate glass or plaster board
- soil
- books
- tyres or other car parts
- paint
- gas bottles
- hazardous waste including asbestos
- clinical waste
- animal waste
- trade waste
- commercial waste
- toilets and hand basins
- mattresses and upholstered furniture
These items must be taken to alternative Gloucestershire recycling centres.

Booking will be required for all cars. Commercial vehicles such as vans are not allowed on the site.
