Am I eligible to vote?

It's simpler, clearer and faster to register to vote online. Visit gov.uk/register-to-vote

You can register to vote if you are:

  • 16 years old or over and
  • a British or Irish citizen

You can also register if you have permission to enter or stay in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man - or you do not need permission - and you’re a:

  • Commonwealth citizen (the definition of a 'Commonwealth citizen' includes citizens of British Crown Dependencies and British Overseas Territories.)
  • citizen of Denmark, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal or Spain
  • citizen of another EU country, if you have had permission to enter or stay - or not needed permission - since 31 December 2020, and this has continued without a break

If you are 16 or 17, you can register to vote but you will not be eligible to vote until you are 18.

When to register

Registration continues throughout the year and the register is updated monthly from 1 December until the middle of August the following year. When you move you need to register again at the new address.

Between August and November the annual canvass is completed. Communications are sent to every property to check who is eligible to register to vote at each household. The email or letter will explain what action, if any you must take.

Am I already registered?

If you are unsure whether or not you are currently registered please email your full name, date of birth and address to [email protected].
