Green kerbside recycling box

Did you know that each UK family uses an average of 500 glass bottles and jars each year? But if thrown into landfill, the glass will never decompose.

Recycled material can return to the market place in as little as 30 days and that’s why the borough council is doing all it can to make recycling even easier from the kerbside.

From 16 October 2017, residents will benefit from a brand new, all improved recycling service.

More types of plastic (pots, tubs and trays) and unwanted, dry textiles and shoes will be collected from the kerbside as part of the new service which is being delivered by the council’s environmental services provider, Ubico Ltd. 

Small waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) items can also be collected from the kerbside, including toasters, household batteries, kettles, irons, DVD players, cameras, hand-held power tools, mobile and digital phones.

Residents will be able to recycle mixed cardboard (brown and grey coloured) by presenting them in new reusable blue bags. 

These extra materials are in addition to the plastic bottles, glass bottles/jars, cans/tins, aerosols, kitchen card and paper which are already collected, meaning that there will be very little left which needs to be sent to landfill.

Councillor Chris Coleman, cabinet member for clean and green environment is excited about the launch, he said:  ‘’With only a couple of weeks to go, local residents can look forward to being able to recycle even more materials from the kerbside. This is great news which will hopefully see more items being recycled rather than being sent to landfill, which comes at a cost to the taxpayer.

‘’In line with the new service, we are asking residents to separate their recycling to make things easier for crews and to get the trucks away from residential streets quickly. 

‘’Most people will have received their information packs which explains the new service in full and because in some areas collection days are changing, we are asking residents to familiarise themselves with the new collection schedule.’’
