Cheltenham Borough Council will be improving the lighting at St James’ Street car park from Monday 16 March 2020.

The installation of the new lighting is set to begin next week and is schedule to take six weeks to complete; the work will affect access to some car parking spaces during this time.

Longer lasting LED lights are being installed around the car park making them a cost efficient and environmentally friendly solution.

The improvements will be carried out in a phased approach, each lasting two weeks, to cause as little disruption to the car park as possible. Visitors will however see approximately half the car park cordoned off from use each week day. The bring bank skips will be moved temporarily to an alternative location within the car park.

The entrance and exit points will remain unaffected so that access is maintained.

Car parking charges will still apply while the works take place and can be paid at the machines or by using paybyphone app.

Works to improve Regent Arcade car park will also commence the week beginning Monday 16 March.

The car park will see hand rails and protective rails, together with pillars and car park walls painted in a phased approach and there will be a reduced number of spaces while work is carried out during the next month.

Cllr Andrew McKinlay, member for development and safety, said: ‘’These improvements are an investment in our facilities. For St James’ Street car park we have notified local businesses, the local school St John’s and local residents.

“At Regent Arcade car park signage will be in place to inform visitors and we appreciate there will be a reduction in the number of spaces. We apologise for any inconvenience caused whilst this essential work is carried out however we hope that customers will see the benefits very soon.’’

Other car parks in the town centre will be available for visitors to use include:

  • St James’ Street car park  - Town Centre East and Sherborne Place car parks
  • Regent Arcade – Rodney Road and Royal Well car parks
