Why we collect information about you?

We use public realm CCTV to:

  • Help prevent, detect and reduce crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour;
  • Help reduce the fear of crime and provide reassurance for all those that live, work, trade and visit Cheltenham thereby enhancing community safety and boosting the economy;
  • Provide evidence to assist in criminal and civil cases;
  • Assist statutory agencies (for example police, environment agency and councils) to deploy their resources effectively;
  • Assist in the management of the public areas covered by CCTV and supportlocal authority enforcement and regulatory functions;
  • Monitor traffic flow and assist in traffic management issues;
  • Assist in civil emergencies and countering terrorism; and
  • Assist in the training and development of staff.

What information do we collect about you?

The CCTV cameras monitor and record moving images of people including information that can lead to their identification (i.e. appearance) and/or movement and activities.

Who do we share this information with?

  • Gloucestershire Constabulary – who proactively monitor public realm CCTV in Cheltenham.
  • Environment Agency – who may monitor certain CCTV cameras for the purpose of monitoring river levels of the river Chelt.
  • Cheltenham Borough Council – authorised employees may access the footage or recordings to support official activities or for the purpose of evidence gathering.

Is there any information transferred to or stored on servers based outside the EEA?

No.

How long do we keep your information?

Recorded CCTV footage will be retained for a period of up to 31 days from the date of the recording.However, on occasions, images may need to be retained for longer periods where necessary for one of the purposes list in this notice. Circumstances where a longer retention period may be necessary include criminal investigations, major incidents or for training purposes.

Who do we collect information from?

People captured by the public realm CCTV cameras.

What are the consequences if we do not collect the data?

The council may not be able to comply with its general statutory duty to prevent, crime and disorder and to promote the safety of residents and visitors to Cheltenham.

Are any decisions about you made by automatic means?
